Shana Carlin Allen, daughter of Steve and Cindy Allen, is an
eleventh grader at Pulaski Country High School in Dublin, Virginia..
She has been an accompanist for the PCHS players for three
years and will also be accompanying the PCHS choirs for
their spring
concerts. In the 2002 International Pentecostal Holiness Church
National Youth Quest talent competition, Shana received second
place. Shana is also an inducted member in Who’s Who Among
American High School Students. Her future plans include playing
horn and piano in the Summer Musical Enterprise’s show
in Blacksburg, Virginia this summer and attending either USC
or Converse College in Music Education or Piano Pedagogy. She
has been studying piano for twelve years with Evangeline Gordon,
and also studies horn with Wallace Easter at Virginia Tech. |
Russell
Corwin, son of Russell and Myung Corwin, is a ninth grade
honors student attending Chapin High School in Chapin, South
Carolina.
Russell has been studying piano for seven years. As an eighth
grader, Russell won the Afternoon, Eau Claire, and Morning
Music Clubs of Columbia Club Junior piano scholarship and
the Columbia Music Teacher’s Association (CMTA) Division
IV piano scholarship and also was second alternate for the
South Carolina Music Teacher’s Association (SCMTA)
Pre-College concerto auditions. As a high school freshman,
he has won the
Afternoon, Eau Claire, and Morning Music Clubs of Columbia
Club Senior Piano Scholarship and the CMTA Division V Piano
Scholarship. For the past two years, Russell has earned a
superior rating in both solo and concerto divisions in the
South Carolina
Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival. He currently studies
piano with Joey Ruddle Rothfuss.

Lucy
Dinkins, daughter of Gene and Nancy Dinkins, is a tenth grader
at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina.
She has been studying piano for the past seven years. She also
studies theory and improvisation with Dr. Dorothy Payne at
the University of South Carolina. Lucy has participated in
the National Guild of Piano Teachers Association and has been
awarded a rating of superior-plus at the national level. She
has attended piano festivals at Furman University and the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro, the Southeastern Piano Festival,
and Brevard Music Center. Following six years with Mrs. Marion
Stanley Tucker, she currently studies with Dr. Marina Lomazov
at the University of South Carolina.

Emory
Hsu, son of Conchita and David Hsu, is a twelfth grader at
Winter Springs High
School in Winter Springs, Florida. Emory has won innumerable
awards, including the North Carolina Concerto Competition at
the age of six.. More recently, he is the recipient of the
Florida Bush Arts Award and is the Florida Federation Music
Club Piano
Concerto and Musically Advanced Piano Solo Winner and the Florida
Music Teacher Association District and State String Concerto
Winner, among other awards. He has frequently performed as
piano soloist with various orchestras and often plays in charity
and
global benefit concerts in the community. He is the valedictorian
of his graduating class and was admitted to Harvard by early
action, and currently studies with Dr. Gary Wolf.

Tammy
Hsu, a daughter of Charlie and Julie Hsu, is an eleventh grader
at Bob Jones Academy in Greenville, South Carolina. She competes
annually in the SCMTA, NFMC, and Guild auditions. She has been
a finalist every year that she has competed for the Ernestine
Smith Scholarship, capturing first place this past spring.
She has performed for such renowned artists as Daniel Pollack,
John Weems, and Ursula Oppens. This past spring she has also
been district representative to the SCMTA Convention and the
northwestern district representative to the Crescent Music
Club Convention. She has been studying for nine years with
Sally Brown Ullom.

Dan
Ying Liu, daughter of Jing Wu and Xiang Liu, is an eleventh
grader at White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee.
She has participated in Tennessee Music Teacher’s Association
competitions since second grade. In high school she has won
awards in the Starr Young Artist Piano Competition, the UCA
Solo Piano Competition, and the TMTA competitions. As a recipient
of the FedEx IRIS Scholarship, she was privileged to attend
Michael Stern’s Iris Chamber Orchestra concerts at no
charge. Last summer she attended the Tennessee Governor’s
School for the Arts and was one of two pianists selected for
a master class with Dr. David Northington. Recently she received “Superior” at
the 2004 Amro Keyboard Festival. She has studied for eleven
years with Dr. Rose Marie Wang.

Brian
Locke, son of Karen and Gary Locke, is an eleventh grader at
North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Georgia and has been playing
the piano since l995. On his performance record are three school
talent shows (all of which he won) and additional appearances
on student recitals. Brian attended the Brevard Music Center
during the summer of 2003 and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro
summer music camp in 2002. He was a member of the Metropolitan
Youth Symphony Orchestra during the 2003-2004 season as principal
keyboard player. Brian has won awards at the state level in
composition and has been nominated at the county level for
the Georgia Governors Honors program. A former pupil of Gregory
Hulse, he currently studies with David Watkins.

Mary
Beth McCall, daughter of Robert and Valerie McCall,
of Greenville, South Carolina, is a rising junior at Christ
Church Episcopal High
School. Mary Beth is a Headmaster’s Scholarship Recipient
with a GPA
of 4.23. For the past eight years Mary Beth has participated
in the
National Guild Piano Auditions ten-piece program, receiving
Superior/Superior-Plus ratings; the South Carolina Music
Teachers
Association competition, receiving Outstanding ratings; and
the
National Federation of Music Club’s competition, receiving
Outstanding
ratings. Recently she received second place for the Ernestine
Smith
Piano Scholarship. Mary Beth enjoys playing soccer and is
in the youth
and adult choirs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She
has been studying
for eight years with Sally Brown Ullom.

Dara
J. McCorkle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McCorkle of Vienna,
Virginia, is a ninth grader who is home-schooled. In October
of 2003 she was selected to play in a master class at the World
Piano Pedagogy Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Dara received
second place in the 2004 Northern Virginia Concerto Festival
and third place in the 2004 Bland Competition. She was chosen
to play in the 2004 Honors Judged Recital of the Northern Virginia
Music Teachers Association. Dara has taken piano lessons for
four years and studies under Carol Ann Barry of Springfield,
Virginia.

Neil
Ostenfeld, son of Karen Avedisian and Richard Ostenfeld,
is a tenth grader at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville,
North
Carolina. Piano is one of Neil’s favored activities,
although he also excels in the sciences and sports, and is
one of the elite runners in both cross-country and track annually.
Neil participated in the 2003 Southeastern Piano Festival,
then in its first year. This past February, he participated
in the piano clinic at Converse College in Spartanburg, South
Carolina, and was chosen to perform the “Macedonian Mountain
Dance” by Hovhaness at the honors recital. Neil enjoys
music by a variety of composers, but particularly favors
Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Liszt. During the past eighteen
months Neil has
studied with Judy Rhodes. |
Katie
Ray, daughter of Lonnie and Becky Ray, is an eleventh grader
at North Bumcombe High School in Weaverville, North Carolina.
She started studying piano at the age of seven. She has played
in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival for seven
years and in 2003 qualified at the Difficult II level to play
at the state level. In 2003, Katie was the winner of the MacDowell
Music Club Competition in Statesville, North Carolina, and
performed at the Annual Young Artists Concert in Statesville.
She also participated in the 2004 Piano Clinic at Converse
College with guest artist Ursula Oppens. In the fall of 2005,
she hopes to enter college with a major either in Music Performance
or Music Education. She currently studies with Judy Rhodes
of Arden, North Carolina.

Samiron
Ray, son of Sumit and Shumi Ray and a tenth grader at Dutch
Fork High School in Columbia, South Carolina, is an avid
pianist who has been playing the instrument since he was six.
Some
of his awards and accomplishments include an SCFMC scholarship
to attend Brevard Music Fesitval this summer, Honorable Mention
in the South Carolina 2003 MTNA competition, and first place
in the Governor’s School of the Arts and Humanities
2001 Piano Festival in the Romantic division. He is also
academically
oriented and is presently in the top ten of his class. Samiron
is a co-host of the statewide Teen Forum radio talk show
and is the captain of his science team. He is currently studying
with Dr. Marina Lomazov at the University of South Carolina.

Sonya
Schumann, daughter of Charles and Linda Schumann, is a tenth
grader at Blacksburg High School, Blacksburg, Virginia. She
has won many competitions and performed with the Williamsburg
Symphony after winning their concerto competition. She also
participated in the Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev competition
for many years, winning on more than one occasion. . She has
also played in master classes throughout the United States,
attending different academies during the summer, including
the Indiana University Piano Academy. She has been studying
the piano since the age of four with Teresa Ehrlich at the
Renaissance Music Academy.

Jooeun
Shim, daughter of Jae Shim, is a ninth grader at Glenbrook
High School in Glenview, Illinois, and has been playing the
piano since she was five. She is currently enrolled at the
Music Institute of Chicago in Winnetka. Her most recent musical
achievement was being one of the finalists in the 2002 Feinberg
Youth Auditions at Chicago Symphony Hall. Other musical achievements
include placing alternate in the MTNA Junior Competition and
winning first prizes in the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior
divisions of the Society of American Musicians competition. Last
year she was participant at the Oberlin Music Festival, and she
also performed as solo artist at the 2000-2001 Young Steinway
Concert Series in Skokie. She is currently a student of Brenda
Huang and Emilio del Rosario.

Leo
Svirsky, son of Janet and Roman Svirsky, is a tenth grader
at Emerson Preparatory School in Potomac, Maryland. He has
performed at the Boston Conservatory of Music, the Metropolitan
Opera Guild Creating Original Opera Conference, the Smithsonian
Institution Piano 300 Exhibition, the Russian Ambassador’s
Residence, Church of the Epiphany, American University, Georgetown
University, and the Contemporary Music Forum. He has worked
in masterclasses with such renowned composers as George Crumb
and Denys Bouliane, playing his own compositions, and with
Leonard Slatkin, Lang Lang, The Juilliard Quartet, and Jean-Yves
Thibaudet. Leo was a second place winner in the 2003 Southeastern
Piano Festival Concerto Competition. He studies piano with
Irena Orlov and composition with Frances McKay at the Levine
School of Music.

Bronwyn
Tarboton, daughter of Debby Tarboton, is a ninth grader at
Logan High School in Logan, Utah. She placed second in the
Elementary Piano Division of 2000 and 2001 Utah State Fair
Music Competitions and the 2001 and 2003 USU Piano Festival.
She won the Elementary Division of the Utah Symphony Youth
Guild competition in 2002 and 2003 and was chosen as alternate
in the 2003 MTNA State Baldwin Competition. In 2001 she performed
with the Utah Symphony Orchestra in the Salute to Youth Concert.
Bronwyn also studies voice with Jennifer Jenson and is a
member of the Cache Children Choir Cantate Ensemble. Last summer
she
performed in the Utah Festival Opera Company’s production
of The Wizard of Oz. Bronwyn is also a member of the Cache
Valley Civic Ballet Company, with whom she has performed
numerous roles, including that of Clara in the Nutcracker.
She currently
studies with Dennis Hirst.

Robert
Layton Wells, son of Bob and Mary Wells, is an eleventh grader
at Wilson High School in Florence, South Carolina. He attended
the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts during
the summers of 2002 and 2003, concentrating on piano performance.
In 2003, he won the Faculty Choice Award in the Music Department.
In 2003 and 2004, he was one of the winners of the South
Carolina Piano Festival competition and performed on Educational
Television.
He has won both the South Carolina Music Teachers Association
State solo and concerto competitions. Robert has been a winner
in the MTNA State composition competition for the last four
years, and in 2004, his composition won the Southern Division
of the Competition. He currently studies with Linda MacKenzie.

Natalie
Elizabeth Wessinger, daughter of Glenn and Martha Wessinger,
is a tenth grader at Chapin High School in Chapin, South
Carolina. She participates in the National Piano Guild and
the National
Federation of Music Clubs. She was first runner-up in SCMTA
Student Composition Competition in 1999, and was presented
a Scholarship Award by the Columbia Music Teachers’ Association
in 2000. She has also performed in the 2002 Honors Recital
at Presbyterian College’s Keyboard Discoveries Clinic,
Piano Clinic 2003 and 2004 and composer Martha Mier’s
USC School of Music Workshop 2000. An accomplished flutist,
Natalie is in the Chapin High School Band, Chapin Baptist
Church Orchestra, and has performed in the 2002, 2003 and
2004 All
State Band, The Sound of American Honor Band and 2003 Chorus
European Tour. She also plays violin in the Chapin High School
Symphonic and Richland/Lexington District 5 Honors Orchestra.
She currently studies piano with Joey Ruddle Rothfuss.

Michael
D. Yu, a son of Weiwei Chen and James Yu, is an eleventh
grader at Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta, Georgia
and has
been playing the piano for eight years.. He has participated
in the State GMTA competition every year, and last year he
was a second place winner of that competition. In 2003, he
was selected to participate in the Southeastern Piano Festival
at the University of South Carolina School of Music. This
year, Michael has received a scholarship at the local chapter
of
GMTA piano competition, and is one of few students in the
state of Georgia who has been selected to participate in the
2004
Governor’s Honors program. He is currently studying
piano with Dr. Anna Arshavsky.

Susan
Zhang, daughter of Hanfang Zhang, is a tenth grader at John
S. Davidson Fine Arts School in Augusta, Georgia. Raised
in Vancouver, B.C., she began studying piano at the age of
six.
Her musical accomplishments include winning the Augusta Youth
Concerto Competition at age twelve, for which she was asked
to play with the Augusta Symphony several times, along with
a series of local competitions, including top rating for
the Davidson Fine Arts Chorale. Susan will accompany the Musical
Theatre group for the 2004-2005 school year. Most recently,
she has been chosen to attend the Georgia Governor’s
Honors Program as a piano major in the summer of 2004. She
currently studies with Lydia Porro Milham.
